Context

ABOUT THE RICIPIENT: Private 1057087 Lyall Starke was born on 3 December, 1897 in Farnham Quebec and was a student at McGill University - having enrolled in the COTC for 1 year prior to enlisting as an original member with the 245th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) on 16th October, 1916. Private Starke boarded HMS Justicia in Halifax on 3 May 1917 and arrived in the UK on 17 May 1917 where he was absorbed into the 23rd Reserve Battalion. He was reassigned and taken on strength (TOS) with the 87th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) on 25th of August 1917. He served with distinction throughput the war until October of 1918 when he was Absent Without Leave (AWOL) and sentenced to 5 days of Filed Punishment No1. Private Lyall Starke proceeded to Canada on 31st May 1919 where he would have been issued this 87th Battalion (British War Department issued) tunic. Private Starke proceeded to Montreal on 9 June 1919 and was finally discharged from the CEF on 22 June 1919. Unfortunately there is no record of his life after WW1 other than this uniform which serves as a tribute to both the 245th nd 87th Battalions Canadian Grenadier Guards
