Description

1940 - WW2 era Mark II (MKII) British Brodie Africain / Italian campaign helmet - with original rubber liner and canvas chinstrap. - unnamed and attributed. Due to the poor condition, paint-over, and rust (oxidation), the makers mark is obscure. This helmet is a MKII type B with the non-magnetic rim and British made 'WD' War Department liner. Used by British, Commonwealth, and Canadian soldiers during the African and Italian campaigns from 1940-1943. This points to a British Brodie due to the rubber lining, type of paint on the helmet shell which was a mixture of sand and paint to reduce reflectivity. For comparison, South African soldiers wore a similar MK II Brodie, however several differences of South African examples include: 1. liner buffers made of felt rather than the more normal British rubber-like material, 2. Three holes in the rear brim for the attachment of a neck curtain for protection from the sun. 3. The liner was marked with the size, a maker's name, the WD arrow and the date. 4. The top screw is of the small brass type, used by the South African army.
