Description

"When folded along curved creases, paper shapes itself into a natural equilibrium form. These equilibria are poorly understood, especially for curved creases. We are exploring what shapes are possible in this genre of self-folding origami, with applications to deployable structures, manufacturing, and self-assembly. This transformation of flat paper into swirling surfaces creates sculpture that feels alive." (from Erik Demaine's website)

Context

In 2008, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York showcased works by Erik and Martin Demaine in the exhibition "Design and the Elastic Mind", focusing on the application of scientific thinking to contemporary design. Three pieces from the series “Computational Origami”, became part of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) permanent collection. Splash and Three Waves Meeting are later works, belonging to the series of five pieces titled "Waves (2009)". The series was part of the exhibit “Papier, Vergankelijke materie, Blijvende indrukken (Paper, Transient Matter, Lasting Impressions)” at the Art Cézar gallery in Rotselaar, Belgium, in March 2009. Between 2012 and 2016, Splash and Three Waves Meeting went on a four-year journey across the United States with "Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami". To build on the legacy of the project, co-curator Meher McArthur proposed that, at the end of the tour, a permanent home be found for these pieces at the Museo del Origami. The works were generously donated by the Demaines and accessioned in March 2016..

Notes

About the artists: Canadian-born Erik Demaine (1981-) earned his Bachelor of Science at 14 and his Ph.D. at 20. His groundbreaking dissertation in computational origami won national awards and a MacArthur Fellowship. Since joining MIT in 2001, he has led research on the mathematical possibilities of folded paper, exploring applications in architecture, robotics, and molecular biology. Artistically, he collaborates with his father, Martin Demaine (1942-), on “Curved-Crease” sculptures and other innovative origami pieces.
