Description

Triptych representing the transformation of a single sheet of paper into the figure of a monk. Each piece in this series of 3 was folded from 38cm square heavy Arches watercolor paper using the wetfolding technique. With a background in architecture and a deep connection to Zen philosophy, Giang Dinh infuses his sculptures with a quiet intensity and flowing energy. The undulating curves of each piece suggest a wave in motion—subtle yet powerful, embracing the viewer in their rhythm. Light and shadow dance across the surfaces, hinting at forms that are only partially revealed, guiding the eye toward the final figure: a contemplative Zen monk. The work is both delicate and forceful, rich with presence and restraint. The triptych was commissioned by Museo del Origami with specific measures to fit in a 137 cm x 75 cm x 28 cm display case where it has been on exhibit since the opening of the museum in January 2020.

Notes

About the artist: Giang Dinh was born in 1966 in Hue, Vietnam, and studied architecture both in his home country and later in the United States. He now lives in Virginia, where he works for an architectural firm. Since discovering origami in 1998, he has become widely recognised for his designs, which are marked by a quiet elegance and a sense of Zen-inspired serenity. Instead of relying on sharp, defined creases—which he likens to lines drawn in ink—he prefers the softness of curved folds, more like pencil sketches, lending his pieces a gentle, meditative quality. Often using plain white paper, he invites viewers to focus on the interplay of form and shadow. Many of his sculptures are created using the wetfolding technique and evoke a semi-abstract, almost sculptural presence.
