Gabriel Rodríguez (Uruguay)
Gabriel Rodríguez was born in San José de Mayo but grew up in Rodríguez, a small town in the countryside. "It all started when I saw two friends making paper boats, which inspired me to learn how to fold one," he recalls about his early steps in origami. Later on, he took on the challenge of folding a traditional crane, "which was a bigger challenge that sparked my curiosity and fascination with patterns and geometry." From there, he continued exploring new models, discovering authors, books, advanced techniques, and related arts. He also taught himself how to make handmade paper.
"I have always folded on my own because there are not many people in Uruguay who practise origami, and also because of my introverted nature, but I would love for the art to become more widely known," Gabriel says with a hint of regret.
In 2020, he was awarded a prize in the Origami by Children competition, organized by OrigamiUSA, for his interpretation of a beetle designed by Japanese origami artist Satoshi Kamiya.
Today, Gabriel is pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences at UDELAR. In his free time, he continues to nurture his passion for origami. "University is demanding, but there's always time to fold," he says with a smile.
