Photo credit: Eric Gjerde: Intricate piece of paper art, skillfully folded to create a mesmerizing pattern resembling a three-dimensional landscape; the folds form a series of peaks and valleys, lending a tactile sense of depth and structure to the composition, as if the paper has transformed into a miniature topographical model of abstract mountains and ridges. The craftsmanship involved in achieving such precise and uniform folds is evident, reflecting both the discipline and creativity of the artist. The neutral color of the paper enhances the focus on the texture

Context

Between 2012 and 2016, this model went on a four-year journey with "Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami". Organized by International Arts & Artists, it became one of its most successful traveling exhibitions, welcomed by museums and libraries across the United States. To build on the legacy of the project, co-curator Meher McArthur proposed that, at the end of the tour, a version of it find a permanent home at the Museo del Origami, which, at that time, was still under construction in Uruguay. As a result, many of the works from the exhibition were generously donated by the artists and became the foundation of the museum’s collection.

Notes

About the artist: Eric Gjerde (b. 1978, Norwegian American) discovered his passion for paper at a young age and remained drawn to origami throughout his life. Though he pursued a career in technology, he later returned to folding as a creative outlet. This renewed interest led him to focus on origami tessellations, where geometry and art meet. After years of exploration and research, he left the corporate world to dedicate himself fully to his artistic work, including the development of new biological paper processes. Gjerde now teaches, exhibits internationally, and shares his work through workshops, conventions, and his website. He is the author of Origami Tessellations: Awe-Inspiring Geometric Designs, a book that introduces readers to the intricate beauty of this form.
