The comptometer was the first commercially successful key-driven mechanical calculator, patented in the United States by Dorr Felt in 1887. Key arrangement is 2-3-3 (2columns in white, then 3 columns in brown, and then 3 columns in white), so is not intended for dollars and cents which would have had 2 columns on the far right.
