A metal slug of iron is heated on a stove and then inserted inside this clothing iron. The handle on it can be flipped to the other side so that both the top and bottom sides of the iron can be used before the slug is removed and reheated. Horace Carver's patent for a removable core iron with a handle that rotated was patented in 1899. This type o iron where heated items were placed inside were known as "box irons"
