Plate Camera
Rochester Optical Co., Rochester, NY
Circa 1900
Prior to cameras that used film wound onto rolls, photography was done on glass plates that were coated with light sensitive chemicals. This Primo Senior model plate camera used 5 x 7 double sided glass plates. After taking the first picture, the plate was reversed and the second picture was taken. Inserting, removing, and flipping the glass plates had to be done under a black-out hood or in a dark room.
