Short-Wave Oscilloclast
Electronic Medicine Foundation, San Francisco, CA
Mid-1900s
This device supposedly used electronic signals to diagnose and cure diseases, detect lies, read emotions, and even determine a person’s parentage. It was created by Dr. Albert Abrams, dubbed “the dean of 20th-century charlatans” by the American Medical Association for his notoriously bogus diagnostic theories and self-invented machines. His inventions were nothing more than black boxes adorned with knobs and lights and filled with wires and buzzers.
