Sextant
Stanley London, Anaheim, CA
Reproduction of early 20th-century sextants
Created in the mid-1700s, sextants are nautical instruments of celestial navigation. Using mirrors and small telescopes, they measure the angular distance between astronomical bodies (sun, moon, stars) and the horizon to determine latitude and longitude at sea. While latitude was easier to find using only a sextant, finding longitude required very precise timekeeping techniques and additional instruments (e.g., the chronometer).
