Ouija Board
William Fuld, Baltimore, MD
1938-1952
In the aftermath of the Civil War, “talking boards” and planchettes became more than simple entertainment as “Spiritualism” surged. Spiritualism was a social religious movement grounded in beliefs about a spiritual afterlife and communion between the living and the dead.
From the first talking board patent on the foundational Ouija board design in 1891 through its sale to Parker Brothers in 1966, Ouija became the iconic talking board brand name in the U.S., synonymous with the notion of communicating with the dead.
