Context

This statue is a Roman copy of a Greek original. The original has been attributed to Praxiteles. Bartolomeo Cavaceppi restored this statue's arms, left leg and head in the 18th century. The head was taken from a statue of Apollo Kitharoidos. Apollo was one of the most prominently portrayed male divinities in the 4th century BC. His youthful, naked style is derived from the Archaic kouros. His hairstyle, with the braid over his forehead, further accentuates the adolescent look that was worn before youths entered the military service and ritually cut their hair.
