Context

Along with his uncle and adoptive father Julius Caesar, Augustus is credited with implementing many of the changes that transformed the Roman Republic into the Empire. Augustus was able to concentrate political power around himself, taking on multiple powers and roles that had typically been divided amongst multiple Roman statesman during the time of the Republic, including near absolute authority over the Roman military, religious, and political spheres. This bust depicts Augustus in a youthful manner, despite likely having been completed after his death. Augustus is consistently portrayed in this manner throughout his reign, as he used this youthful persona to associate his image with the popular sun god Apollo.
