Context

Early in the twentieth century the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Near Eastern Museum) in Berlin acquired this bronze statuette along with several similar objects originating from the area now known as Syria. The figure has a large head, deep eye sockets, long braided hair, and a pointed beard. Its body is roughly cylindrical, the shoulders exaggerated, and the arms are bent at a forty-five-degree angle, with the hands in front. It wears an asymmetrical tunic or skirt that is short in the front and long in the back, coming to a point behind the knees. The identity of the bearded figure is likely less important than its function as a votive object. The figure may be the portrait of either a man or a deity. Such figures would have been left at temples or other sacred sites as offerings for the gods and were intended to secure the god’s good favor.
