Description

The rim is everted and uneven. The vessel constricts at its short neck then widens at the rounded shoulders which have vertical ribs, likely in imitation of a poppy pod. The body is squat and globular with a disk base and a pontil mark. The vessel is intact with iridescence and some encrustation.

Use

Perfume Vessel

Context

An extremely rare form of jar. In the Near East and ancient Rome, expensive scents were typically held in unusual containers which exemplified their extravagance. It is believed that vessels which imitate fruits likely stored the scent of said perfume, thus this vessel may have stored a poppy scent.
