Context

The colour of glass was determined by both substances naturally present in the raw ingredients and those which were added by the manufacturer; for example, copper oxide in blue glass or iron oxide naturally present in green glass. Before the Hellenistic period, colourless glass is rare as most manufacturers were unable to control the influence of the iron oxide.
