Description

The rim is rounded. The funnel shaped neck constricts slightly at the junction with the body before flaring out into sloping shoulders which widen to the base, creating a bell-shaped body. The base is flat with a pontil mark. The vessel is intact with trace iridescence and an old collection label to the base.

Context

The use of a bell-shaped body with a wide flat base was common in the Iranian region between the ninth and eleventh century CE. The style was popular in both glass manufacturing and metalworking however, it is unknown which of the two inspired the other. More commonly, these shaped vessels appear with relief cut decoration such as arches.
