StatueContext
She is a reduced copy of a Roman version of the original Greek prototype and, of course, a visible progeny of the Aphrodite of Cnidos, though the original is shown as stepping out of or into the bath. This Aphrodite stood on a dolphin or porpoise whose tail fins can still be seen at the back of her left leg. The female form, especially of a goddess, was always, at least partially clothed. However, with Praxiteles’ depiction of Aphrodite of Cnidos, this had changed. The female form of Aphrodite was now being represented in her nude form and successors of Praxiteles were following in his footsteps, producing similar works. The Aphrodite Anadyomene reflects this change as well as an increasing interest in the female body represented through art.Made/Created
