Context

This frieze represented the festival, the Great Panathenaea, which was celebrated by the city of Athens in honour of the goddess Athena. The festival was celebrated every four years, and on such an occasion a peplos, made by noble women, was used to clothe a wooden statue of the goddess. An important part of the festival procession consisted of racing chariots, but more importantly horsemen races. Images of horses and horsemen occupy about half the frieze.
