Context

This frieze represented the festival, the Great Panathenaea, which was celebrated by the city of Athens in honour of the goddess Athena.. The festival was celebrated every four years, and on such an occasion a peplos ,made by noble women, was used to clothe a wooden statue of the goddess. An important part of the festival procession consisted of racing chariots, but more importantly the horsemen. Images of horses and horsemen occupy about half the frieze. The probable artists are Ictinos or Callicrates under Pheidias. The title could also be "Preparation for the Cavalcade", which may be a more correct guess than the preceding pedantic identification. The well composed and structured group, a difficult task on a relief, as well as the well articulated bodies and poses, bear witness to the heightened skills, experience and sensitivity of Classicism. Nonetheless, the picture remains a living tableau. It is a frozen action, not yet thawed by naturalism.
