Context

Sculpted by Scopas of Paros, and originally from the sanctuary of Athene at Tegea. This head expresses great character and is an unconventional example of the idealized beauty standards of classicism, and is therefore linked to works from the middle period of Praciteles (340 B.C.). The beauty of Hygieia results from the finesse of her narrow face and her deep-seated melancholy eyes.
