Cattle EgretDescription
The family Ardeidae contains the herons, egrets, and bitterns. Cattle Egrets are common in Georgia's agricultural and wetland areas, easily identifiable by their small white bodies, short yellow bills, and compact appearance. They are known for their habit of following livestock to feed on disturbed insects and frogs, sometimes even perching on animal's backs. These birds, which originated in Africa, Europe, and Asia, have successfully expanded to this continent, finding favorable habitats in the warm, rural landscapes of the Southern U.S. This bird was photographed in a wildlife refuge east of Savannah, Georgia.Collection
