According to the artist, "The painting is an emotional summary of synopsis of my response to the colors, shapes, and forms found in the dramatic landscapes of Providence Canyon State Park, Georgia. The composition was simplified and the colors and shapes were enhanced to convey an iconic version of my experience at the site.
Along with other faculty members and students, he spent years investigating the art and science of Providence Canyon, often called Georgia's Little Grand Canyon. Providence's sixteen gorges and 43 distinct colors are the record of Georgia's geologic history and mas's impact on the landscape. "Survivor Tree" was displayed as part of the ART ROCKS exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in 2014-2015.Collection
