Untitled: Lady with Brown HairEntry/Object ID
A2021.13.01Description
Lady with Brown Hair is likely to have been a friend or family member who sat for Segal and provided him with a subject to ponder. His attention is direct, her gaze is off slightly to one side and directly at the painter. In a contra posto seated position, her face is one direction and her body squarely facing the artist's view. This painting is likely painted from life in an alla prima fashion (in one sitting). The color changes in skin tone from face to decolltage perhaps denotes a technical naivete by the artists therfore placing this piece among his earlier beginning works. Or, more likely, we are in possesion of an unfinished work that had some promising aspects to the artist. Segal was always noting what he saw and there is often color shift that occurs from face to body.Artwork Details
