Segal obtained his early artistic training in New York at the famed Arts Students' League. We see classical training here as Segal observed this recling nude model from a rear point of view. We can see Segal's ability to capture perspective and his facility with the quality of line is evident. All the elements -- except color -- are at play: composition, line, value, texture.
