Context

The glass tumbler, sash and card are associated with the Young Chinese League, set up in 1932 to provide social engagement and activities for young Australians of Chinese descent, and to further advance the prospects of Chinese Australians. It was hoped that this would lead to further understanding in the broader Australian community og what the Chinese community could contribute to the nation. The League still meets today. The King & I production at the Princess Theatre in 1962 included a number of Chinese-Australians, including the donor and children living around Chinatown. The proximity of the Princess Theatre fostered interaction between two communities and a number of previous residents recall as children, being allowed backstage and interacting with the staff and cast of various shows.
