Context

Pearl Fischer (1913-2009) was a relative of Num Chong and one of ten children. Her father, Harry Chung/Chong Hion (1853-1929) was an interpreter who had a shop in Little Bourke St, 3 doors down from the corner of Russell and Swanston Streets. The family lived in Carlton. Harry died when she was 16 - he was run over by a tram and is buried in the Melbourne General cemetery. Her mother, Georgina (Gina) Josephine Carter (1877-1966), married Harry in 1915. She had an Uncle Sam who lived in Carlton, on Cardigan St where he owned two terrace houses, where he'd moved to from Bendigo and the gold mines. He sent money to Canton, presumably so that one of the other family members could go to University. Pearl says that her father never mastered English; still, he did all letters for the Chinese in Melbourne.
