Norman Geoffrey ('Geoff') Goon was born April 1920?
These photographs are related to the Goon family. They were orginally two collections of photographs that belonged to sisters Ada Goon (nee Mahlock) and Emily Lee Ack (Nee Mahlock). These photographic scans were donated by Fay Anderson, Ada Goon's grandaughter. Ada Goon married Frank Shum Goon who was a prominent herbalist in the late 19th Century. His main practice was in Ballarat but he also had rooms on Exhibition Street in Melbourne, where he saw patients once a month. Frank and Ada had 8 children, from which 6 served in WW2. Roy Goon was particularly noted for his service in the Australian Air Force.
Historic: This material links to the history of the Goon family and the successful practise of Chinese Herbalism in Australia. As well as the hisotry of Chinese-Australians in the military forces.
Scientific: Chinese herbalism played a significant role in maintaining the health of chinese and non chinese Australians in the pre WW2 period, particularly as it could be successful when western medicine was not.
Social: Chinese herbalist hold a strong place in the memories of both Chinese and non-Chinese Australians. They offered a service to the community that was particularly Chinese and was often successful when other medicines were not.
Interpretive: These images can be used to show the history of the Goon family and the practise of Chinese Herbalism in Australia.Acquisition
