Context

Kevin Yon was born in 1921, the only child of Elva Violet (nee Hoyling) and Victor Gordon Yon. He grew up in the Brunswick-Moreland area, attending North Brunswick State School and then University High School. An active sportsman he represented Victoria in the Linto Cup while at high school and contined to play tennis, hockey, golf and bowls throughout his life. He trained as a teacher at the Melbourne Teachers College. He is believed to be the first person of Chinese Australian ancestry to become a secondary school principal. He has ancesters from both the Hoyling and Ah Ket families, both well known Chinese-Australian families. His uncle Harry Hoyling served in WW1 and was involved in an immigration scandal in 1911 and his grandfather Ham Hoyling was a notable businessman. William Ah Ket is believed to have been Australia's first barrister of Chinese-Australian descent. He worked hard to support Chinese rights in Australia.
