Compiled by experts and scholars from the Palace Museum, this anthology gathers 120 works by 120 representative artists from the major schools and styles of court and literati painting during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The editors, focusing on themes that reflect the social realities, human sentiments, ideological consciousness, and aesthetic tastes of the Ming and Qing eras, carefully selected representative works across various genres—such as gardens, reclusion, leisure, elegant gatherings, genre scenes, portraits, social exchanges, and travel records—spanning landscape, portrait, and flower-and-bird paintings. Over half of these works are reproduced for the first time in this book. To broaden perspectives and enhance appreciation, the editors provide concise descriptions for each artwork, detailing the artist’s biography, achievements, primary influences, the work’s theme, and its place within artistic traditions. Additionally, to provide deeper insight, necessary explanations of inscription and collectors’ seals are included. This book is the first mid-sized anthology in recent years to showcase iconic works by key figures of major Ming and Qing painting schools from the Palace Museum’s collection, making it ideal for both appreciation and study, offering readers a comprehensive view of Ming and Qing painting.Dimensions
