The cashbox is associated with The Rocks Chinese Laundry in George St, Sydney. Along with market gardening and cabinet making, laundering was one of the common post-gold rush occupations among the Chinese. The cashbox also relates to the history of Chinese settlement around The Rocks and Chinese trades in the area.
Scientific: Research potential of cashbox is uncertain.
Provenance: The cashbox was used in The Rocks Chinese Laundry in George St, Sydney, left behind when premises vacated. Next occupier was Deborah Auchinacie who opened the "Chinese Laundry Antique Shop'. The donor purchased the cashbox from Deborah around 1978.
Condition: The items all show signs of use, however they look to be in good condition from the photographs.
Interpretive: The cashbox has excellent interpretive capacity and would fit in our current display of the Chinese Yet Sing Laundry sign.Acquisition
