This is an old photo album with windows for pages where carte de' visites and cabinet cards can be stored. It probably dates from the early 1900s. All but 21 photos have been removed from the album. It came from the Harry Wassmann estate but is probably not his family since many of the photos show photographers from Iowa.
Have asked the Historical Society in Marshalltown to identify any photos that they can. They have identified one photo (photo 19) as being Miss Julia Sower (1857 - 1930) a well known resident of Marshalltown. In tracking her family I found one of her brothers, Hugo J Sower (1859-1926), who had a son born in California, Alfred (1875-1939). Hugo and his wife Elizabeth Goldsmith (1861-1924) didn't stay in California long. The 1882 voter registration shows them in Pima, Az and the 1900 Federal Census shows them in New York.
Other photos of interest are:
photo 13 is a postmortem photo - notice the eyes are drawn in
photo 17 was taken by the Watkins studio in Yosemite (Carlton Watkins)
photo 14 is a tintypeCollection
