This is a scrapbook/photo album of World War II news wire photos and news text of the war in the Pacific. It features some graphic photos of prisoners of war and soldiers wounded or killed in action. None of the photos will be uploaded to our online archive and will only be available on the Museum's computers.
The photos will be accessioned individually along with the original text supplied with the photo where it is still intact.
The tenth page shows one photo. It shows a trench with Japanese dead on Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll. It says that the Japanese held out for 24 hours before the US Marines took the island. There were few prisoners as those who were not killed in action committed Hari Kari like the two bodies in the foreground of this photo. Hari-kari, an alternative spelling for hara-kiri, is a ritual suicide in traditional Japan.Collection
