Description

Metal artillery shell "trench art" in shape of a missile using projectile components. Army Ordnance Department "ball and flame" in center (possible Benicia Arsenal). Shell casing and Ball & Flame are brass. Projectiles are brass with steel core. On bottom of shell are intitals RA and number 42. This is a .50 caliber cartridge used in a Browning M2 machine gun. It was made by Remington Arms in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1942. The bottom of the cartridge is stamped RA 42 (manufacturer and date). The Browning machine gun was the most widely used weapon on the American bomber and fighter planes of World War II.
