Scope and Content

Envelope commemorating the Battle of Shiloh on April 6-7, 1862. Date of Envelope is April 7, 1962. Inside there is a description of the battle that reads: Turning Point of the Civil War The Shiloh Civil War Centennial Stamp commemorates the Battle of Shiloh, fought April 6 and 7, 1862.This was the greatest battle fought in the west and the turning point of the War Between the States. Nearly 24,000 were killed, wounded or reported missing --- more than one-fifth of the number of both participating armies. This battle had a definite effect on the thinking of both sides. The Confederates learned from bitter experience of the error of their former low opinion of the northern soldier. This battle also removed from the minds of northerners any idea of any easy victory that may have been gained from the victories at Forts Henry and Donelson.
