Scope and Content

Benevolent Society of California Charter was sealed in Benicia on September 15, 1949. Two other years appear on the Charter 1868 and 1921. A.M. Carvalho, whose name appears on the Charter, was Grand President and established Carvalho Steamship Agency with partner, J. R. de Faria, in San Francisco in 1915. TIMELINE 1868 Associacao Portuguesa de Beneficiencia de California was established in San Francisco. 1871 Associacao Portuguesa de Beneficiencia de California merged with Associacao Protectiva to become Portuguese Protective & Benevolent Association of the City and County of San Francisco (APPB) 1948 APPB changed its name to Benevolent Society of California 1957 The Benevolent Society of California merged with Uniao Portuguesa Continental (UOC which was formed in 1917) to become United National Life Insurance Society a new division, Luso-American Fraternal Foundation took over the fraternal, social and cultural activities. Charter of the Benevolent Society of California and reads "on November 20, 1921 to the persons hereinafter named for the purpose of instituting a subordinate council at Benicia, County of Solano, State of California, with the right to admit members, hold meetings, and conduct business pursuant tothe constitution and by-laws, the rules and regulations and the rituals of the society."
