This is a Declaration of Homestead filed by A. (Adrian) Verhave for the South 50 feet of lot 5 block 20 in Benicia. (This is at First and G street in Benicia.)
The declaration states that he is a married man and the head of the family. He says he has been residing with his family in the city of Benicia for a long time. He also says that the lot with dwelling house, buildings and improvements does not exceed the value of $5,000 dollars.
These must be qualifications for doing a Homestead. It could be this was an attempt to claim property that was in question due to the Supreme Court ruling about the Soscol Ranch lands. I can find Mr. Verhave in the 1868 in Alameda voters register.Collection
