Denver (for whom Denver CO and Denverton CA were named) Written in the script of the day, interpreted as best as can: Customs House Benicia January 19th 1856 James W. Denver Esq. Dr Sir I believe I promised to write you occasionally during your stay at Washington and give you what news and how matters were going on in Solano County. Since your departure nothing of great importance has transpired, business of all kinds very dull as usual during the wet season. Custom House affairs go on aout the same have received $1800. Dating this on since the first of December. I notice an article in the San Francisco Herald giving the receipts and expenditures for the year ending Nov. 1st 1855 and recommends to abolish all Ports of Entry except San Francisco. You will see that Benicia stands second and it is necessary that this District should be kept w/o Vallejo is still growing although business is dull at the island. The Legislature is in session and some sparring about the U.S. Senator. Joseph Vaughn had been appointed Clerk in the Secretary of State Office and Alf Estice has the promise of Clerkship to the board of Land Commissioners. Bynum (?) has moved up to Sacramento with his family. Jo Winston (?) is at work had for his County, he was down a short time since and said he was going to write you. W.B. --------- McKay is still here has sold the Folsom Estate for $12000 or 14000 dollars hope he may get it. A new paper has been started at Benicia of which I send you a copy.
