First Day Cover commemorating the launching of PG96 USS Benicia built by Tacoma Boatbuilding Co. Tacoma Washington. The 2nd ship named Benicia Sent to Alice Moon, 1309 Farrell, Vallejo CA 94510 from Tacoma Wash. on Dec. 20, 1969 BHM2012.025.0001a - information card: "The cachet in which this card is enclosed commemorates the launch of PG96, the Benicia; the second vessel to bear the name; the first being a sloop of ward displacing 2400 tons, built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and commissioned December 1, 1869. The earlier USS Benicia was considered an excellent example of naval architecture; among her exploits she took part in the Korean Campaign of 1871 and there captured two bronze top-breech loading cannon which were on display at Alden Park, Mare Island, California, until recently. The new USS Benicia is one of a modern class of patrol gunboats whose mission is search and pursuit. The ship is named in Honor of Benicia, California, an Industrial and residential community located on Carquinez Straits, north of San Francisco. U.S.S. Saginaw Chapter #59, U.S.C.S.
