Twelve page essay by Janet Frost on California History and specifically Robert Semple's Ferryboat in Benicia. She starts with General Vallejo deeding land that had two provisions to the deed. The first was that the new town was to be named after the General's wife, and the second that a ferry boat service be operated to run from the new town to the Contra Costa shore. The proceeds from the ferry were to belong to Robert Semple until the first 100 families lived in the town, and then the revenue was to go to the public schools.
The ferry ran from the foot of First Street to both Martinez and Port Costa. She goes on to touch upon several significant items from the early Benicia history.
The story is easy and interesting reading. All pages will be included in this entry.
