Description

B/W photograph of the Brigantine Galilee shown under sail during the last of three magnetic data-collecting survey cruises. Galilee was a Brigantine built at the Matthew Turner Shipyard in Benicia in 1891 and was built for use on the packet line between San Francisco and Papeete, Tahiti. From 1905 to 1908 the Galilee served as the carrier for the Carnegie Oceanic Magnetic Survey party conducting research to correct the meager and inaccurate data of magnetic variations prior to 1905.
