The story takes place in the early 1800's - an attempt by the Russian American Company to colonize the West Coast of America (Alaska to Norther California). The idea was championed by Nikolai Rezanov but it didn't come to fruitiion.
There are chapters on Rezanov's rise through the Russian aristocracy and his participation in an around-the-world voyage of mapping and discovery.
His connection with Dona Maria de Conception Marcela Arguello, known as "Conchita", is only a small part of the story.
