The story takes place in the early 1800's - an attempt by the Russian American Company to colonize the West Coast of America (Alaska to Norther California). The idea was championed by Nikolai Rezanov but it didn't come to fruitiion. There are chapters on Rezanov's rise through the Russian aristocracy and his participation in an around-the-world voyage of mapping and discovery. His connection with Dona Maria de Conception Marcela Arguello, known as "Conchita", is only a small part of the story. 6-1/4" x 9-1/2" x 1-1/4" red hardcover with gold lettering on the spine & dust jacket: beige, grey red are dominant colors; drawing of a sailing ship in a cove with buildings of a small settlement in the background
