The first letter from Mary J. talks mainly about family matters; her Uncle Edward gave each of them a silver dollar, she's having a party with 20-25 boys and girls, went to Mount Auburn, a most beautiful place. The second letter from Maria is full of advice for Samuel to be careful and stay safe. She reminds him that he doesn't have any relatives in Baltimore and therefore no one to rely on for advice.
