This is a letter dated 06/23/1844 from Samuel Gray's sister Mary Joanna regarding family matters. The matter most on her mind is a proposal of marriage from William Blanding. She writes to Samuel for his advice, explains all of the reasons why she likes Mr. Blanding and the reasons why she doesn't want to marry him. She is worried by his age, over 40 and a widower. His wife, Mary Richard Blanding (1797 - 11/09/1843) and he says that Mary reminds him of his wife.
She says in the letter that she has turned down his proposal but records indicate that they married December 1844 (see below).
