This is a letter dated 02/10/1847 from Samuel Gray's sister Mary Joanna Gray (1820 - 1909) regarding family matters. She talks of teaching for the first year. She started with 5 scholars and now has 19. She enjoys teaching and asks Samuel how Lucy (his future wife) enjoys teaching. She says that their Uncle had offered to build her a school room but she prefers to remain independent.
She compares her social life in Columbus, GA to what it would be in Baltimore and thinks she will not make Columbus he permanent home.
