This is a letter dated 12/29/1848 from Samuel Gray's sister Mary Joanna to her sister-in-law Lucy Wetmore Gray, regarding family matters. She recounts having visited her uncle and his reading her a letter he received from Samuel C Gray, his nephew, telling him that he and Lucy are going to California. She tells her husband of the news when she gets home and how sad it makes her.
Mr. Davis then consoles her by saying that in a few years they may be able to go to California and become rich. She then says that there was a letter from Samuel at the Post Office for her with the same news. The rest of the letter says how much she will miss Lucy and Samuel and also what Lucy will do with her household things.
