Description

This is a letter from Lucy Wetmore Gray to her cousin Elizabeth A Hayden. It is from Middletown and dated 02/25/1849. (This is prior to Samuel and Lucy leaving for California.) Lucy describes their planned trip across the Isthmus of Panama as: sail on the Crescent City from NY to Chagres / take the Orus up the river 25 miles / canoes for another 10-12 miles / mules for about 20 - 25 miles / to Panama where they wait for the steamer California. Lucy talks of leaving her friends and family behind but also that she has two brothers and friends in California. She mentions Dr. Peabody who left on the Crescent City in January. Lucy also assures her cousin that she is not pregnant. (A pleasant surprise awaits them upon reaching California.) Lucy talks of their living arrangements in San Francisco and hopes that Henry does not stay at the mines but rather stays with them in San Francisco.
