Description

This is a letter to Samuel C Gray from his uncle on his Mother's side, Edward Powers. The letter is written while he is in New York, NY. Mr. Powers talks of his travels the past year and says that this summer has been the happiest time of his life. He tells of visiting Samuel's cousin, Jefferson Williams, in Ohio where he has a small farm. Mr. Powers has said in other letters that he would like to help Jefferson. He offers his opinion of other members of the family and isn't so kind to them. He finds Samuel's sister Mary to be lazy and Mr. Wells seems to not please him either. He congratulates Lucy, Samuel's wife, on having a daughter and suggests that she continue to have daughters as they are a scarce commodity in California. He then lists two different accountings that Samuel has sent him in the past showing what he thinks is an error in his accounts.
