Gray Letters 1852 03 19

The image features a historical document dated March 19, 1853, from Middleboro, Connecticut. It is a handwritten letter from Levi Hubbard to Samuel Gray, expressing surprise upon learning that Gray had tools and possibly a shop sold with an outstanding mortgage. Hubbard appears concerned that the shop was mortgaged without prior notice and requests clarification on the subject. The letter's tone suggests a misunderstanding or oversight regarding the sale and financial obligations, prompting Hubbard to seek resolution or explanation about the ownership and ensuing responsibilities. The old-fashioned cursive writing is typical of the mid-19th century.

Description

This is a letter from Levi P. Hubbard of Middleton, Conn. to Samuel Gray in Benicia dated 03/19/1852. (The address on the front addresses a Mr. Lamiyard and Wetmore but does also show an addressee of Mr. Gray. Not sure what this means.) The letter concerns tools that Mr. Hubbard was told were sold even though Wetmore & Gray had a mortgage on the tools and/or the shop where the tools were. In previous letter (dated 12/13/1851) Mr. Hubbard was told by Mr. Wetmore that he had dissolved his partnership with Samuel Gray and that Mr. Gray would handle his request. There is also talk of freight costs being reimbursed I think for the return of the tools. NOTE: Samuel Gray's mother's maiden name was Hubbard. This letter could be from a relative of Samuel Gray.
